The ninth British Food Fortnight (BFF) is under way – the UK’s biggest and longest-running showcase of home-grown produce.


The event, which runs from 18 September to 3 October, promotes the “Buy British” message through promotions and tastings, all-British menus, meet-the-producer events, food and cookery lessons and local food festivals across the country.

Nine of the largest food service organisations and eight major pub groups are joining the hundreds of independent shops, pubs, restaurants, schools and hotels putting British food on the menu and shop shelves during the two weeks.

North Yorkshire egg producer James Potter was picked to appear on all the event’s posters and promotional material as the “Face of British Food Fortnight 2010” after a nationwide search involving BFF, Farmers Weekly and PR guru Max Clifford.

“As a country we do not shout enough about some of the great food and drink that we produce, which makes British Food Fortnight especially important,” says James.

“In today’s unpredictable global economy, it is more important than ever that we develop and encourage local businesses. The best way of doing this is by getting people involved and British Food Fortnight does just that – it’s the biggest national advertising campaign for British farm produce.”

Secondary and primary schools will be encouraged to take part in food-related challenges as part of the celebrations. Pupils at seconday schools will be given the chance to compete in a contest inspired by TV’s Hairy Bikers (pictured), while pre-school and primary school pupils will be tasked with impressing presenter Michaela Strachan with the ultimate smoothie.
