DOG ATTACKS on sheep are becoming a serious problem for some farmers on Dartmoor, who are calling for owners to take more responsibility for their pets.

Geoff Arscott, of Great Weeke Farm, Chagford, said he had experienced seven attacks since October, with four sheep having to be destroyed. Other farmers have had similar problems, although a Dartmoor National Park spokesman denied a park-wide problem.

The authority has erected 500 signs requesting that dogs are kept on a lead, but some farmers are taking a more militant – albeit legal – approach. “I now take the gun with me every time I go to see the sheep,” said Mr Arscott.
