A local authority is threatening chicken owners with fines of up to £5000 if they don’t keep their birds quiet.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council is receiving complaints about noisy cockerels at the rate of one every other week. It believes the rise in complaints is because of an increase in people keeping chickens as pets, but failing to kill the cockerels.

A spokesman said: “In the commercial world, the cockerels would be despatched, but in the Good Life version, the cockerels aren’t being culled.”

The council has now issued advice set by the Poultry Club of Great Britain on how to keep noise to a minimum, but said it is prepared to issue fines up to £5000 for failure to comply.
