Farm Womens Club

Farm Womens Club events are gearing up again after foot-and-mouth forced the

cancellation of many. National organiser Jean Howells reports from two

All sorts of bells – and

so appealing

TO wear a white jacket on a visit to a bell foundry is a mistake. I found this out at Taylors in Loughborough where a lot of graphite is used in the preparation of moulds for casting bronze bells.

Nottinghamshire FWC members met at this Victorian working foundry, the largest in the world. At the beginning of the tour Margaret Collingham presented museum curator Robert Bracegirdle with a bell that had been ploughed up on her farm and asked him to research its history.

This was his cue to demonstrate the different sounds produced from a variety of instruments including Aboriginal clapsticks, horsebrasses, goat bells, sleighbells and handbells.

There are 40 people employed in the foundry including wheelwrights, leatherworkers, ropemakers and the bellfounders.

The largest bell in London was cast by Taylors in 1881 – its the 16t Great Paul at the cathedral of the same name, larger than Big Ben which is a mere 13t bell cast by the rival Whitechapel Foundry.

We listened to the tuning forks and marvelled at the range of notes before seeing the casting hall built in 1880. This is where the cores and cases are made from a mixture of black and red sand, straw and horse manure and painted with graphite.

We watched how engravings are skilfully written from back to front before the molten metal is poured into the mould and left to cool for the weekend – bells are always cast on a Thursday and left in the sandpit to cool down.

The next stage of our tour was the tuning shop where the procedure to get the right sound is done with the help of a tuning machine, an absolute godsend to the tuners. It was invented in 1897, and saves them spending all day with their heads inside the bells!

I am sure it wont just be Margaret who returns to retrieve her bell and some interesting facts about it. The museum is the sort of place you can return to and always learn something new – especially when shown around by such an enthusiastic curator.

Something for everyone at the fabulous Millets Farm…

AT last, the Oxford FWC had a meeting – the first in three months – and didnt they have a lot of catching up to do.

They met at Millets Farm Centre, Frilford – an amazing place in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. It started out as a pick-your-own fruit and vegetable farm and has grown into a fabulous venue for the whole family.

There is something for everyone, from the craft shop, garden centre, restaurants and childrens zoo.

The farm shop is set out like a supermarket, stocked so well with local produce, yummy-looking asparagus just inside the door, new potatoes and a wonderful array of fruit and vegetables from further afield.

Fish from Grimsby is displayed in one corner; the local honey and raised pork pies particularly caught my eye and at the end of the meat counter the varieties of sausages were the most Ive seen.

Luckily the members were all on time so I recognised the group standing by the door of the Munchery, where all the food served is home-cooked and locally-produced.

Its been a long time since I visited this friendly group, we had a lot to chat about as we wandered around the garden centre. Alice Mansfield reminded me of my last visit when we discussed the possibility of hydrangea-growing as a diversification; Barbara Wilson gave me some gardening tips and Julia Barnett and I could have talked about knot gardens for hours. The joys of living in the country were discussed at length and then contact leader Doris Burton held court by a pond with a soothing waterfall. And so another FWC meeting was arranged ensuring the continuation of friendship among the farming folk of Oxfordshire.

8 January 1999

No turning back – despite left luggage

ON the morning I left home to travel to various points north it wasnt until an hour had passed and I was on the slip road of the M25 that I realised my suitcase, so carefully packed three days earlier, was still at home.

I know I am always saying I like to travel light, but this was ridiculous.

I never turn back, so onwards I went to swoop in on the Cheshire members having their Christmas lunch at the Bears Paw, Warmingham. There were about 80 of them tucking in to plum pudding when I arrived. I wish I had thought of wearing a black skirt and white blouse and given the waitresses a hand to see how quickly I would have been noticed.

But the welcome was warm and the coffee was hot and in the short time I was there I managed to converse with several members, meet two new ones and draw the raffle.

I drove off into the sunset, feeling a warm glow of early Christmas spirit and optimistic that I would find some clothes in the Red Cross shop, thereby doing more than myself a favour.

&#42 Low clouds

The low clouds above Lancaster closed in around me as I headed for Linghaw Farm, High Bentham, home of the Butterfield family. I was so relieved to see the colourful, hand-painted sign at the farm gate loom towards me as I gingerly drove down the drive.

The farm kitchen had been turned into a toffee factory for the evening as middle daughter Pamela was preparing for Christmas. Her younger sister Catherine was full of beans as usual but the eldest sister, Sandra was still away at college which was lucky for me as I was allotted her bed for the night.

Elaine, their mum was as busy as ever juggling looking after the family with relief milking and helping husband Robert get ready to take some calves to Carlisle the following morning. He was also getting into the spirit of the festive season by taking old red velvet curtains to decorate the stalls.

&#42 Evening off

Anyway, the FWC dinner was a good excuse for the evening off and as you couldnt see your hand in front of your face, Elaine drove us to the Plough at Lupton where more than 30 of us sat down to a traditional Christmas dinner.

When I was asked to say a few words, I declined but confidently said that I would work my way around the domino tables and talk to everyone. If you win or come second in a round you move on to the next table and I managed to move each time bar one, ending up with a high score and a prize at this my one and only game each year.

I had a rare experience on arrival in Northwold, Norfolk, in that the village still has a post office and, therefore, a point of contact for local people, as well as a handy place for strangers to get directions.

Oh how I miss that facility in my own village, it is such a pain for everybody to travel at least three miles to the nearest shop.

The postmistress at Northwold said that I could not miss the Woodland Lodge where the South West Norfolk FWC was meeting for the Christmas lunch. Well, I already had missed it once but next time along that road I saw the sign and ventured in for a couple of hours good company and much laughter.

Contact leader, Pam Eyles had come up with a good idea for people who cannot eat chocolate by suggesting serving profiteroles with maple syrup – delicious they were, too.

&#42 Well travelled

A lovely smile spread across the rosy cheeks of Katie Tallentire, contact leader of Lancashire, as she greeted me at her home. Katie epitomises what is good about being part of the FWC over the years; she says that if she had not joined she would never have been so well travelled and made so many friends far and wide.

Another member, Edna Colman reminded me of a familiar problem. She and her husband live in a rural area and are now unable to drive. It is all very well being told to use public transport. Even if there are buses or trains nearby, the busstop or station has to be reached and often this is not possible.

I know from my own relatives experience that the expense of taxis is prohibitive but then cars are also very expensive to run. I would be interested to learn from members what methods of transport are available to them in their area.

It saddens me to hear of members feeling isolated and not being able to get out. How many of you are there? Please write and tell us your experiences and how you cope in the countryside without a car.

Farm Womens Club

24 July 1998

Farm Womens Club

WHAT a happy evening we had at North Norfolk FWCs farm tour and barbecue, held at Francis and Marion Keys home in Thurning.

The evening started with a trailer ride down to the meadow where orchids and other wildflowers grow in abundance, and those who had sensible footwear were able to walk back.

Someone suggested I took off my shoes and held them above my head as I walked through the mud but I rejected the idea and got a lift both ways, enjoying the honeysuckle and wild roses and the company of mums, dads, children, grannies and grandpas.

It was one of those rare summers evenings when you could sit outside till late, and we did! To see the sun setting in the wide East Anglian sky and watch the horses grazing was a sight to behold.

It was a pleasure to renew the acquaintance of the members of the group and to enjoy a proper barbecue under the lime trees.

MEG Barkers dining hall was transformed into a woolly bazaar for Leicester FWCs jumper party. Her staircase and landing became a changing-room for 30 or so members looking for a bargain.

It was all great fun, as there was such a variety to be looked at tried on and discussed with friends. The two ladies organising the sale were pleased to take far fewer home with them.

Jean Mills took care of the business side of the meeting and got everyone organised for the next few months meetings. Tea was served by Megs willing helpers and the washing up was soon done under the efficient leadership of her husband, John. Suffice to say I got out of it!

A ROGATION Sunday service was held at Alton Court, Dilwyn, the home of North Hereford contact leader Eleanor Wellings, and for five generations of the Wellings family.

People congregated from far and wide – Farm Womens Club members among them – to take part in this traditional service and to walk around the well tended apple orchards.

The service started in the farmyard, near the house, where the hymn Thanks be to God was sung and prayers were said for homes and family life. The gathering then moved on to stand by the pond where a blessing was made on all water, the necessity of life. The service continued by the growing crops and pasture, under a magnificent oak tree, by the apple orchards and lastly at the barn for a final hymn and the blessing, one of my favourites:

Deep peace of the running wave to you;

Deep peace of the flowing air to you;

Deep peace of the quiet earth to you;

Deep peace of the shining stars to you;

Deep peace of the risen Christ to you.

The following walk around the well mown orchards was extremely interesting, seeing what hard work goes into tending the trees, and admiring the blossom but avoiding the bees.

Tea was served later in the immaculate farm buildings. All proceeds of this delightful country afternoon were donated to the restoration fund of St Marys Church, Dilwyn.

CAMBRIDGE FWC hold their meetings in the evening and are a great example of how to attract members who still have children living at home. The younger members drive the senior ones to meetings, so there is a good mix of age groups which suits everyone.

The occasion I attended was the fifth birthday dinner held at the George and Dragon, Elsworth. It was super to be driven for a change through the Cambridgeshire lanes bedecked with blackthorn hedges in full flower, collecting members on our way. What a lively, entertaining evening – I felt that I had known this group forever. They were in fine form and obviously enjoy each others company when they get together.

The following morning I was up with the lark, enjoyed the dawn chorus which seems to have disappeared from my neck of the woods and drove through the early morning mists of the fenlands, enjoying Haydns trumpet concerto as I headed south to the office to get on with some real work!

JUST my luck – the morning I travelled to see the Warwickshire FWC, there was a 17-mile traffic jam on the M25. Never mind, I thought, Ill drive up through London.

I drove over Battersea bridge and then along the embankment, which reminds me to mention that theres going to be a FWC outing to Kew Gardens in June. Watch this space for the booking form.

I eventually arrived at Princethorpe and was welcomed by the contact leaders. I have met quite a few of the members in this group before, their presence has been noted at last years health farm break, the Houses of Parliament visit and the Norwich weekend. They are the epitome of FWC members taking the opportunities offered to meet others from different areas.

We had a most enjoyable lunch, good food, great conversation and a wonderful view across outstandingly beautiful countryside.

I decided that this was the place to have the veterans day in July as the hotel has a large car park and the garden would be a marvellous place for us all to get together, weather permitting. If not, theres plenty of room inside.

Jean Howells

More than 40 members attended Warwickshire FWCs lunch at Woodhouse Hotel, among them (Lto R) Sue Holloway, Judy Channing, Betty Knight and Chris Cotterill.
