NFU announces growing membership – but frustration over freeloaders

The NFU has hit out at farmers who “freeload” the union’s services without signing up to be a member.

New figures from the union show membership has increased this year by 730 producers and the organisation now has over 55,000 farmer and grower members.

Head of membership Huw Hilditch-Roberts said the increase in membership was encouraging but it was “hugely frustrating that some farmers and growers feel as if they can freeload on the back of the NFU. We are asking those people to come and join us.” This message echoed comments made by Peter Kendall at the NFU’s Centenary conference in February.

The statistics confirm that the NFU as the largest farming organisation in the UK and Mr Hilditch-Roberts said the NFU was doing great work on behalf of its members.

“No other farming organisation has the depth of expertise or contacts of the NFU.

“Through its offices at Stoneleigh, London and Brussels, and throughout the regions, the NFU influences decision-making and legislation at the very highest level, day in, day out.

“There are so many reasons to become a member of the NFU but our greatest strength is unity as we represent all sectors of the industry. We will continue to speak up on behalf of our members with passion and power to show that farming can play a key role in the country’s future.

“There are a number of challenges facing the industry and the NFU is in good shape to meet them head-on with a clear sense of direction, strong leadership and a sound financial base. I am calling for all members to encourage their farming friends and neighbours to join up today.”
