pam ayresPoet and countrywoman Pam Ayres is to be a judge of the RABI/FW poetry competition.

The contest is calling on budding or established poets to pen some lines entitled Ode to a Welly.

It’s one of the many events taking place in the run-up to National Welly Week (pdf), which runs 11-18 October and is raising funds for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

What style your poem is in, how long it is, and whether it’s serious or silly is up to you. There are two age categories: 15 and under, and 16 and over.

Pam, who keeps Dexter cattle, will pick the best two from the final shortlist and these will be published in Farmers Weekly.

Email your entry to fwfarmlife@rbi.co.uk or post it to Farmlife, Farmers Weekly, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey, SM2 5AS. It has to arrive by 1 October, 2008.

Don’t forget to tell us which category you are entering and include a daytime number (obviously, mums and dads can help children send their poems in).

A new hardback edition of Pam’s book The Works – The Classic Collection will be published by BBC Books in September.
