Tractor driver arrested after fatal crash

A tractor driver has been arrested after his vehicle and trailer were involved in an accident in which a man died.

The accident took place in Sidlesham, West Sussex, at 7am on 28 September.

A red Alfa Romeo was in a collision with the trailer of a tractor being towed in the opposite direction, according to a Sussex Police statement.

The tractor was carrying large square bales of straw which fell on to the car, crushing the 70-year-old driver. A dozen firefighters tried to save the injured man but he died at the scene. Two other cars were involved but the drivers were unhurt.

The 25-year-old tractor driver from Chichester was later arrested by Sussex Police on suspicion of causing death by careless or dangerous driving.

Sussex Police has asked witnesses to telephone 101 quoting “Operation Dovecot”.
