Tornadoes are more usually associated with North America than East Anglia. But farmer Alan Barrow is lucky to be alive after freak weather hit Essex.

The beef and sheep producer expects to spend the next six months clearing up the mess after a ‘twister’ left a trail of destruction on his farm near Halstead.

Repairing damage to 10 farm buildings will cost £100,000, says Mr Barrow, who was knocked to the ground as a barn roof was torn off.
