We are searching for the best young talent in the countryside, So if you’re between 18 and 25 on 20 July 2014, from a farming or non-farming background, are practically minded, love the outdoors and have a passion for food and farming, we want to hear from you.

There’s a £10,000 prize on offer.

And while you register your interest (see below for how to), Farmers Weekly asked on Facebook and Twitter what skills and characteristics you need to be a farmer. Here’s what you came up with:

On Facebook…

Patience, flexibility, quick thinking, an understanding that farming is a lifestyle not a job – your working hours are dictated by nature.
Gill Bennett

Patience, determination, grit, ability to think for yourself, the ability to to work alone and a desire to learn. Wayne Coe

Thinking on your feet. Chris Rolfe

A business mind, drive, patience and, more importantly a sense of humour! Katie Miles

Passion, hard working, smart thinking, the love of nature and accept to learn everyday with humility. Dimakatso Portia Mokwena

Attention to detail. Leonie Ibberson

Determination, stamina, good ideas, progression. Stephen Cope

And on Twitter…

Fresh Meadow Farm @FreshMeadowFarm

My advice would be: Don’t ever think you will know everything because you never will, and never be afraid to ask.

In this part of the industry you need a thick skin!

Patience and passion!
