DUTCH AGRICULTURE minister Cees Veerman has lifted restriction orders on 88 of 199 livestock farms temporarily closed after the discovery of dioxins in potato peelings fed to the animals. Tests on meat from these farms were negative.

fischer boel job to be confirmed

COMMISSIONER designate Mariann Fischer Boel of Denmark is expected to replace Austria’s Franz Fischer in charge of agriculture next week, following a European parliament vote. The vote was due after FW went to press, but the commission was expected to be approved unopposed.

IRISH FARM groups are fighting for the continuation of live exports once P&O withdraw its services on Dec 19. The Irish Farmers’ Association is working with a French shipper to secure the Rosslare:Cherbourg route, and is also hoping Brussels will allow lorries to reach the continent via the UK. EU FARM ministers are expected to agree new live animal transport standards when they meet for their monthly session in Brussels on Monday (Nov 22). The new rules will cover things like driver training, ventilation and watering, but stocking rates and journey times will be left unchanged.
