Fearn Farm, near Tain, Ross-shire, a 410ha (1,015-acre) unit owned by J Scott & Partners.


The family partners are John Scott, his wife Fiona and his mother and father, Janet and James.


Land is Grade 2 and 3, lying about 50ft above sea level and ranging from sandy to clay.


There is 174ha (430 acres) of grass and 222ha (550 acres) of arable (now mostly spring barley, with some combining peas) with 40ha (100 acres) rented out for potatoes. Most arable cultivation and harvest work is carried out by contractors.


Fearn runs 110 suckler cows (a commercial herd plus 20 pedigree Shorthorns and four pedigree Aberdeen Angus cows) plus a 750-ewe commercial flock (70 pure Texels and 30 pure Beltex ewes, 110 LLeyns) and 300 easycare ewes in May.


Fearn has taken part in Scotland’s Monitor Farms project.
