The Royal Welsh Show 2011: Pig interbreed championship

It was a fitting win for Wales in the pig ring, with aWelsh gilt from Phil Fowlie, Braemor, Aberffraw, taking home the silverware.

The interbreed female champion, Braemor Daffodil 12^th, is in pig to a boar from the Victor line and due to farrow for the fist time in August. She is one of eight, mainly Welsh breeding sows run by Mr Fowlie and is a Braemor Emperor 3^rd daughter, out of Braemor Daffodil 5^th.

It was a particularly sweet win for Mr Fowlie, who has been unable to show regularly this season due to heart surgery, but has worked hard to exhibit at the Royal Welsh.

Judge David Overton said: “It was a hard decision, but the gilt had it over the boar on the day. She’s nicely in-pig, walks well and has a good underline.”

In reserve was the interbreed male champion, a Large White October-2010 born boar from Bleddyn Beck, Panorama, Neath.

Panorama Prince 20 is by Portbredy Prince 2112 and out of Prestleigh Beryl 17. He comes from a run of successes having won interbreed champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. He now returns home where he may become the new stock boar or may be used as an AI boar in Belgium.

The reserve interbreed pig also received top honours in the interbreed pairs class with his litter mate, Panorama Beryl 25.

Both had already been crowned interbreed pair at the Great Yorkshire Show, with the gilt also winning supreme interbreed at the Three Counties Show.

Handled by Mr Beck and Lisa Kennedy in the ring, the pair received the Phil Fowlie award – donated by the breed championship winner and presented by chief veterinary officer, Christianne Glossop.

Taking reserve were the Berkshire pair, both from Chris Impey, 7 Llantrisant road, Porth.

Both the gilt, Fairoaks Lady 13 and boar Fairoaks Ambassador 6^th are by Fairoaks Ambassador 4 and out of Fairoaks Lady 4.
