2250gns for freshly calved at Borderway dispersal

Demand for young, fresh calved and correct young cows and heifers was seen at one of the largest dairy herd sales o the year, when the entire Dardenburn Holsteins herd and followers went under the hammer at Borderway last Friday.

Not surprisingly many in the milking portion made more than 2000gns and several maidens over 1000gns.

Topping trade at 2250gns was a June calved second lactation cow, classified VG85 and by the popular Comestar Outside. Her dam was a VG87 Comestar Leader daughter. She now joins John Duckworth’s herd at Floors Farm, Kilmarnock.

Just missing the top spot at 2200gns was a non pedigree July calved cow, giving a daily yield of 32kg, by Roylane Jordan. This one was headed up the road with T Forsyth, Newton Stewart.

Mr Forsyth took home the next two top priced animals paying 2150gns for an August calved cow, Dardenburn Westminster Potsy 5. This one is by Avenham Westminster PI and out of Dardenburn Tugolo Potsy.

2100gns secured him another Roylane Jordan daughter, Dardenburn Jordan Mary 35. By Roylane Jordan she is also an August calved cow out of Dardenburn Mtoto Mary 30. 

Paying the same money this time for a Rosedale L Rampage Red daughter was J O Hodge, Eyemouth. Dardenburn Rampage Red Laura 5 who calved in July is giving 20.2kg a day and is out of Dardenburn Jordan Laura Red Red Red

Still in the money at 2050gns was Dardenburn Granite Lucy. Having last calved in May, this was AI’ed in July and is sired by Cogent Granite PI and out of Luptonhall Patron Lucy. This one is giving 50.1kg daily.

Back on the bidding scene was Mr Duckworth again securing a Comestar daughter for 2000gns. Dardenburn Outside Bertha by Comestar Outside PI and out of Dardenburn Archie Bertha calved in August this year.

Del Convincer and out of Ingleview Miss America. This July calver was secured by T Forsyth, Newton Stewart.

It was J O Hodge taking the next two lots; the first a Comestar Outside daughter, Dardenburn Outside out of Weeton Storm Lulu. The next cow was also a Comestar Daughter, Dardenburn Outside Darkie. This one out of Dardenburn Tugolo darkie calved down in July.

Clayton’s Partnership was next to secure a top priced cow, Dardenburn Westminster Shirley 21. This one is by Avenham Westminster PI and out of Dardenburn Leader Shirley and is due in calf to MOET Melody after being AI’ed last November.

Also taking one of the top priced cows were Barony College, Dumfries. The cow, Dardenburn Jordan Bertha is also due in calf to MOET Melody and is by Roylane Jordan PI and out of Dardenburn Leader Bertha.

The dispersal brought an end to three successive generations and nearly 80 years of the Rowland family’s involvement with dairying at Snape Farm near Hexham.
