A small entry of Aberdeen Angus bulls at the breed society’s Dungannon show and sale reached a ceiling of 2,900gns.

The sale saw six lots sell to average £2,502 – an 86% clearance and an increase of £171 on this time last year.

Sale leader was the eighteen-month-old Tamneymullan Jupiter N127, which earlier in the day impressed judge Moses Irwin Jnr to take the male championship award.  He is a son of the three-times All-Ireland Aberdeen Angus champion Rosemead Karona J967, and is out of Gilkey Jude H635 – one of 17 cows in Robert and Keith Sufferin’s Maghera-based herd. Buyer was Edmund Smith from Ballygawley, County Tyrone.

Judge Moses Irwin Jnr, who runs the 50-cow Denamona herd, Fintona, County Tyrone, described the champion as long, clean bull with a great top, sound feet and legs, and excellent breeder character.

The first prize winning Drumcorn Lord Indiana N943 TSI+27 SRI+38 bred by John and Ann Henning, Moira, attracted a bid of 2,500gns.This March 2013 born entry was sired by Woodvale Total G616, and is out of the Ballamanaugh Estefan daughter Drumcorn Lady Ida J663. With a daughter calving ease score +2.6 in the breed’s top 15% he sold to Harold Gilmore from Dromore, County Tyrone.

Also selling at 2,500gns was the third placed Taugh Blane Black Jack N181 consigned by William Wallace, Dromore, County Down. Born in April 2013 he is by the Canadian-bred Young Dale Superior 14S, and is out of the homebred Woodvale Total G616 daughter Taugh Blane Black Bird K081. Buyer was Colin Bolton from Swatragh.

The reserve male championship went to the May 2013 born Drummeer Pirlo N223 TSI+28 SRI+36 from Alan and Naomi Morrison’s 15-cow herd at Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh. By the Australian sire Carrington Park Time On B7, he is out of a home-bred dam by Jeremy Eric of Bridgefoot. This one boasts an eye muscle score of +4.6 in the breed’s top 15%, and sold to Gareth Smyth from Cloughmills.

Females

Aberdeen Angus females peaked at 3,500gns, paid to Alwyn and Carol Armour, and sons Lee, Craig and Adam, from Dromara, for the seven-year-old cow Woodvale Polly Pride G605. Sired by the Vermillion Dateline son Woodvale Mr Angus E163, she is out of the Blelack Lord Hildalgo A234 daughter Tofts Polly Pride D611 – one of 12 cows in the herd. Included in the price was her April born bull calf by Woodvale Lord Jaguar M445, which sold for a top price of 4,700gns at Dungannon in Feburuary. P’d in-calf to Wall Royal Leo, she sold to John Foster from Castlederg.

The Armour family also scooped the female championship award with the March 2013 born Woodvale Lady Jane N482, which sold to John Best from Poyntzpass for 2,600gns. Sired by Woodvale Trademark L257 – a half brother to the easy calving Woodvale Total G616 at AI Services (NI), she is out of a homebred dam by the herd’s former stock bull Wedderlie Net Profit E916.

Next best at 2,350gns was the unshown Richhill Rosanna N392 from Robin Lamb’s herd at Richhill, County Armagh. Born in May 2013, she is by the American-bred SAV Brave 8320, and out of a dam from the herd’s multi award winning Rosanna cow family. P’d in-calf she joined the Dartrey herd owned by Hylda Mills and AW Buller, Scarva, County Armagh.

The father and son team of Adrian and Graeme Parke, Strabane, claimed the reserve female championship with the May 2013 born Coolermoney Rossita N342. Sired by Lawsons Ford Bagatelle Z094, her dam is the Coneyisland Legend E112 daughter Coolermoney Rosita J003 – one of nine breeding females in the herd. Shown successfully during the summer, she attracted a bid of 2,000gns from Jim Donaldson from Killylea, County Down.
