An outstanding show of Blackface females met a strong demand from the packed Lanark ringside at the weekend (March 1). The pre-show champion, Ewesain, a one-crop ewe from Ewen Macmillan, Lurg, Fintry topped trade at 5,200gns. Sired by Balliemeanoch Stag and carrying twins to the £50,000 Pole tup, she sold to judge Iain Finlay from Blackcraig, in partnership with Troloss.
The reserve champion was a gimmer from the Wight’s Crimp Cramp flock brought out by Brian Gilchrist. Sired by a home-bred son of a £40,000 Nunnerie and in lamb to the £26,000 Dalchirla, she sold for 2,300gns to G Watson, Straiton, Maybole.
Receiving the second top price of the day of 4,600gns was Hugh and Alan Blackwood, Audhouseburn. This gimmer by the £55,000 Connachan and in lamb with a single to the £50,000 Crossflat. Buyer was RJ Coulson and Son, High Staward, Hexham.
The second prize ewe from Nunnerie sold at 3,600gns. She is a daughter of the £20,000 Midlock and in lamb to Dynamo. She headed to the McVicars from Lephinchapel at Strachur.
John and Archie MacGregor from Allanfauld made 3,200gns for a three crop ewe sired by the £17,000 sire Netherwood. She is in lamb to the £1,000 Crossflat. Purchaser Sam Wallace from Co Antrim.
John and Charlie Harkin from Loughash, Co Tyrone received 3,100gns from Ewen MacMillan, Lurg for a two crop ewe by a son of McRae and in lamb with twins to the £3,000 Midlock lamb.
The Wight’s Grains flock, earned 3,000gns when selling their fourth prize gimmer by the £5,000 Blackhouse sire to E Bowman, Upper Craggabus, Islay.
At the same money was the fourth prize ewe from Arnicle. This one crop ewe sired by the £20,000 Auldhouseburn, in lamb to the £15,000 Connachan was bought by Mary McCall Smith, Connachan.
