A record entry saw 46 Limousin bulls go under the hammer at Brecon last Saturday to average £2545 with a top price of 7000gns achieved twice by the Rhiwllech Herd of D M Howells, Cymmer, Port Talbot.

Representing brothers David and Lynn Howells’ best sale price to date, Rhiwllech Euphoria and Rhiwllech Eclipse each made 7000gns to top the trade here. Both bulls are sired by the eight year old Kype Tornado, bred by Mr R Cruickshank, Strathaven, Lanarkshire, who was purchased privately from Andrew Powell, Knighton as a youngster.

Commenting, David Howells said: “Kype Tornado has always been a very good show calf producer and sired our previous best bull at sale at Brecon in May 2010, the 4,400gns Rhiwllech Euro. We are now planning to take semen off him.” The Rhiwllech prefix was established in 1996 and numbers approximately 20 pedigree cows which run alongside 30 commercials with the stated aim being to gradually move towards an all pedigree enterprise in the future.

Purchasing Rhiwllech Euphoria were L R and H M and I R Lewis, Dolaugwynion, Llandovery, Carms for their commercial herd. Euphoria is a May 2009 born bull sired by Kype Tornado and out of Nealford Tina, a Broadmeadows Cannon daughter. He picked up a red ticket at the pre-sale show under judge James Hazard of the Mereside Herd, Saltby Heath Farm, Skillington, Grantham, Lincs having previously stood Male Champion and Reserve Limousin Champion at this year’s Cowbridge Show and Pontardulais Show respectively.7000gns 1.jpgBuyer of the second 7000gns bull, Rhiwllech Eclipse, was J Bryan and F K Jones, Pentregwyn, Llan Nant Bran, Brecon for their Penyfan prefix and commercial holding. With a second prize at this year’s Royal Welsh to his name, and carrying a Beef Value of LM+41, he sold to A Thomas, Llanliggo, Monaughty, Knighton. Commenting, the Judge said: “This was a really impressive lineup of good quality, commercial bulls. My Champion was a nice, correct, well-balanced bull with a good top and good length.”

Junior Champion and Reserve Overall was Lowerffrydd Easyrider consigned by John Evans, Lower Ffrydd, Caersws, Powys. Mr Hazard said: “The Reserve Champion was stylish, smart and with great natural muscle. This was a very good standard of bulls to meet what the commercial market requires.” Lowerffrydd Easyrider is an embryo calf and full brother to the 30,000gns Lowerffrydd Empire.res champ.jpgHe is sired by the French bull, Objat, and out of the Nenuphar daughter, Dentox Valium. A combination of bloodlines, visual appeal and performance (Beef Value LM+34) convinced DA Thomas, Ffynondafolog, Penybont, Carms to snap him up at the 4500gns mark.

Two bulls made 3800gns. First of these was Ashledge Entrepreneur from Messrs A G Kirton and Sons, Severn Lodge Farm, Kinlet, Worcs. Entrepreneur is the first son sold at sale by Springsett Benefactor, a Croftlimousin Squire son, and is out of the dam Ashledge Azute who bred the 8500gns Ashledge Drummond at the corresponding sale last year. Purchaser was Mr J Roberts, Coed Y Foel Uchaf, Bala.

Second animal at the same money was one of the youngest bulls into the ring, the second prize winning June 2009 born Beulah Empire, brought out by Messrs M J and J M Price, Penycrig Faerm, Llanafan, Builth Wells. Sporting a Beef Value of LM+30, this is another by Objat and out of the Broadmeadows Cannon granddaughter, Meudwy Primrose, who already has eight calves to her name. Beulah Empire now heads to D and G James, Trefaner, Llandeloy, Haverfordwest.

Twemlows Emirates was next best at 3400gns for first time Brecon exhibitors, W L and J A Forrester, Twemlows Farm, Higher Heath, Whitchurch, Shrops. Twemlows Emirates is an AI son of the prolific Wilodge Vantastic and out of the homebred dam, Twemlows Uncutgem. With a tremendous Beef Value of LM+43, this March 2009 born bull sold to D H Jenkins, Cathal, Cwrtnewydd, Llanybydder.

Heading a very strong female trade was the 2100gns Broadoak Demelza from C Richens and Son, Coppa Dolla Farm, Broadhempston, Totnes, Devon. January 2008 born, she was offered PD’d in calf to the French sire, Ulm. Sired by Limo Tanat and out of Broadoak Arielle, she had previously stood Interbreed Champion at Totnes Show as well as Reserve Interbreed Champion and Supreme Beef Champion at this year’s Kingsbridge Show.
