Ulster’s largest competition for commercial cattle was staged at Balmoral show grounds at the weekend when over 100 top notch entries competed in the 8th Annual Summer Spectacular, organised by the NI Commercial Cattle Exhibitors Club.
Securing the Supreme Championship was James Alexander, Randalstown with his Heatherview Cooper sired heifer aptly named “Miss Steak”. This January born British Blue heifer was bred by James, and formed part of an 11 strong entry at the event from his Jalex commercial team. Miss Steak was earlier placed British Blue Champion and picked up a red ticket in the lightweight heifer class on her way to claiming the Overall Championship.
Reserve Supreme went to John Killen, Crossgar with his super Guards Boomer steer “Wee Tyson”. Tipping the scales at 490kgs, this flashy steer was Limousin Champion and winner of the lightweight class.
Topping the calf section was Mark Doyle, Kilkeel with his April 2012 born heifer “Tulisa”. This was the most successful days showing to date for Mark who runs 20 cows with the aim of producing show calves.
Alan Veitch was in Reserve in the calf section with his Charolais sired bull calf “Bobby Dazzler”. This calf is enjoying a great show season to date, and formed part of the winning pairs at the Summer Spectacular when teamed up with his herd mate “Eye Candy”.
