A lead price of 5000gns and no fewer than 11 calls at 2000gns or more marked out last Friday’s Christmas Cracker sale of Texel ewes at Carlisle as one of the season’s most succesful in-lamb ewe sales to date.
Heading up the prices was John Forsyth with the best from his Glenside flock, a Baileys Money Maker daughter out of a dam by Douganhill Jeronimo. This one, which goees back to the great-breeding Muiresk Blondin, was sold ddue in March to Midlock Nimrod. Buyer was Alasdair Beaton, Falkirk.
And Mr Forsyth took the next top bid, too, for another from Glenside, this time a Muiresk Blondin daughter out of a dam by Muiresk Glenfiddich and line-bred back to Blondin. This one sold the J Howard, Potto, Northallerton, at 3500gns in lambs to Nimrod again and due at the end of February.
Next best at 2700gns was one from the Knock flock of Albert Howie, Peterhead. Glenside breeding was to the fore still, though, with this one being a daughter of Glenside Mylord and out of a dam by Anglearke Krug. With an index of 193 and in lamb to Tophill Knockout, this one is a full sister to Knock Nugget and sold to Andy Ryder, Annanwater.
At 2600gns Mr Howie sold his next best and the fourth-highest priced of the sale. Another Mylord daughter, this one is out of a Castlecairn I O U daughter and carried an index of 187. Sold in lamb to Nockout, buyer on this occasion was Messrs Hughes, Llwynsarn, Gwynedd.
Also trading at 2600gns was the Haddo flock of Willie Knox, Turriff, when selling a gimmer with an index of 201 out of a Blondin sired dam and by Summerwood Grand Union. Due in early February to 22,000gns sire Millar’s Outsmart, this one sold to W and C Jones, Henlan, Denbigh.
The final call at 2500gns and above was for the best of the Rascarrel offering from Tom MacTaggart, Castle Douglas. This one is a Templand Megane daughter out of a dam by Tophill Jewel and sold at 2500gns to Messrs Arnott, Kelso.
