Two gimmers from the Milnbank flock of Margaret Lyon of Aberdeenshire topped a busy day’s trade at the Texel Christmas Stars Sale, Carlisle, recently with bids of 7800gns and 6200gns.

Auctioneer Robert Addison of auctioneers Harrison & Hetherington said the trade had defied the difficult conditions of this year’s lamb market. “For the right goods there is money being spent and, in fairness, we had some of the best Texels from individual breeders forward to which the ringside responded.”

Topping the trade was Tima Look At Me-sired gimmer whose dam’s maternal brothers had achieved sale values of 6200gns and 3200gns. In lamb to Millar’s Outstanding and with a genotype rating of ARR/ARR buyer was Proctors Farm of Slaidburn, Lancashire.

Immediately preceding the event’s top bid had been a call of 6200gns from John Forsyth of Maybole, Ayrshire, for an Eastfield Merlin-sired gimmer again in lamb to Millar’s Outstanding. With a matching genotype rating to its flock cohort this female was by a good-sized ewe purchased for 2500gns from the Glenside Flock.

Earlier in the sale a call of 5800gns secured the highest priced gimmer from the Strathbogie flock of James C Innes of Aberdeenshire, which stayed within its county being taken by buyer G Morrison of Banff. Sharing the same service sire at the sale’s top deals, this Milnbank Lyon King-sired gimmer had been served by AI on Oct 1st.

Close behind was a call of 5000gns for an Eastfield Merlin-sired gimmer taken by D Cowie of Rothienorman, Inverurie.

Proctors Farms were back in action paying 5000gns for the best gimmer from the Annan flock of G K Jamieson, Dumfriesshire. This Annan Limmy-sired gimmer was out of a Knock Impulse-sired dam and had been AI’d to Templand Outlaw.

The same purchaser also created the day’s top price for the Sportsman’s flock belonging to Messrs Boden and Davies of Stockport, Cheshire. This time it was a bid of 2200gns for a Merrick Mighty Mouse-sired gimmer which had been AI’d by the sire Castlecairn Nile God.

There was a flurry of deals finalised around the 2000gns mark with entries from Fordafourie topping at 1800gns.
