A fantastic quality entry of freshly calved Holsteins sold to a top call of £2,200 for a heifer at Exeter’s dairy sale last week (Friday 14th).

Hemburyfort Duchess 60, by Sandy Valley Bolton was forwarded by Derek Pyle of Exeter, who sold five over £2,000 with his consignment of ten averaging £1,959.

Bernard Taylor of Totnes continued his dispersal with a consignment of 15 cows and heifers, which sold well to £1,950 for a non-pedigree heifer and fourth calvers from the same farm sold to £1,700.

A second calver Titterton Buckeye Grace sold giving 50Kgs at £1,950 for Ken Bragg of Chulmleigh. Messrs BHG Farm Partnership of Surrey sold a consignment of 23 stale milking cows due in November and December. They made a top of £1,320 and averaged £1,030.

Youngsock sold to a decent trade for the quality forward, with a consignment of British Friesian youngstock selling to £650 for Andrew Tilley of Wiltshire. British Friesian heifer calves also sold to £360 for Brian Down of Chulmleigh and Jersey cross calves sold to £300 for Eastfield Farm Partnership of Crewkerne, Somerset.

Kivells also dispersed the Spring and Summer calving portion of the Pedigree Jersey herd on behalf of Messrs Wilson of Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, who moved their herd to Exeter Livestock Centre, Devon for convenience of sale. The vendor was well rewarded with an exceptional trade and an excellent crowd of buyers gathered around the ring.

Top of this dispersal was 1,820gns for a second calver Berwick Iatola Sophia by SC Gold Dust Paramount Iatola, which calved fresh in May and sold to Judith Reed of Pembrokeshire to join her Pedigree Holstein herd.

Other second calvers by DJ Lirsk under the same prefix sold to 1,700gns to Keith Donovan of Southern Ireland, who purchased a strong consignment of 21. The same buyer also paid 1,600gns for another fresh second calver by Woodstock Lexington. The best of the in milk heifers sold to 1,400gns for Berwick Shark Slea, an April calved heifer by Imperial Shark. The dry cows sold to 1,600gns for a super Mulberry fifth calver Newmoor Big Boy Pixie by Osberton Angels Big Boy. Other dry cows sold to 1,300gns for a fourth calver by Errlyn SS Pride GR. Many of the best fresh calvers sold well between £1,200-£1,400 and saw several buyers compete hard for the quality cows forward.
