Devon Show 2012: Simmental secures beef interbreed championship

TS 1852012 Devon Beef Champ.JPGA Simmental heifer has secured the title of interbreed champion.

The win for Sterling Krumpet’s Britney from Boddington Estates, The Manor, Boddington, Gloucestershire, follows a run of successes last year having secured junior championship titles at The Highland, Royal Welsh and Great Yorkshire Shows. And her full sister won the Burke Trophy at the Royal Show in 2009.

This being her first outing this year, bodes well for her next trips to the Three Counties Show, National Simmental Show at Peterborough and the Royal Welsh later in the season.

Homebred, she is out of Stirling Crumpet and by Stirling Flint, and returns home to the herd of 42 pedigree cattle. She was shown in the ring by Jimmy McMillan.

He has previously won male champion at the Bath and West and heads to the same show in a couple of weeks. He’ll also be shown at the Highland Show and Royal Welsh.

As main stock bull for the herd of 12 cows, Mac has half a dozen calves on the ground and was running the stock up until last week.

Speaking about his champion, Cornish judge Hugh Lello said: “She is a marvellous heifer, the longer I look at her, the more I appreciate her.

“The Angus was close behind, but the heifer won due to her shear correctness on the day.”
