Two free-range egg producers in the Scottish borders merged this month to maintain their strong brands and continue growth in the region.

Oxenrig Eggs approached Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs this year as their tenancy at Coldstream, Berwickshire is set to end in 2009.

Supplying outlets across the Scottish Borders, Northumberland, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Oxenrig decided to amalgamate with Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs as it would allow them to continue production on a different site, while leaving the packing and grading to Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs.

“It has been a growing concern as our business has steadily expanded, that there has been an obvious need for more hens at Oxenrig,” said Sarah Calder of Oxenrig.  “We both felt strongly that the brand that we had created must not be allowed to disappear.”

Catharine Armstrong, director of Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs in Northumberland, was delighted by Oxenrig’s decision.

“We have the same standards and goals and so see this as a positive progression.  It’s a huge responsibility to take on Oxenrig and my sister, Christine, and I are very proud to have been given the opportunity to take this strong brand forward,” said Catharine.

The decision to amalgamate was made in August 2007 and operations will be in place by August 2008.
