Fodder and straw in demand at South West sale

Kivells and Husseys have seen a very busy week on the fodder and straw section with over 2,500 bales going under the hammer at sales both in Devon and Cornwall.

Entries of fodder and straw came in from Sussex, Hampshire and all parts of Devon and Cornwall resulting in plenty of buyers in attendance and ready to spend.

Overall top call was ÂŁ27p/bale for the pick of barley straw coming from Martin Carr of Brighton in Sussex with his load of wheat straw at ÂŁ26.50p/bale. Also selling well were the Odgers family of Newlyn East near Truro in Cornwall reaching ÂŁ25p/bale for their straw.

The haylage trade was a little more selective however just over 700 bales were sold with premium awarded to Mr J Derricott of Longdown near Exeter at ÂŁ24p/bale, Messrs Salter at ÂŁ21.50 and Messrs Bowden of Crediton at ÂŁ21.

Speaking after the sale auctioneer James Morrish of Kivells & Husseys said ‘This was one of the biggest sales of fodder in Devon and Cornwall for a long time and it was pleasing to see quality consignments reaching a strong trade.’
