Carcasses from the premises infected with foot-and-mouth are due to be hauled to Wessex Incineration, Frome, about 80 miles from the farm, for incineration, according to an industry insider.

A source told FWi the site was being used as it was the most well equipped premises to handle these cattle.

“This site is one contained in DEFRA’s contingency plan and has all the relevant protocols in place to ensure the risk of infection is minimised. Other sites may closer, but they are less well suited to handling this material.

“Furthermore, the transport will be sealed and leakproof and will travel by main routes,” added the source.
