A website designed by the NFU to promote the buying of British turkeys for Christmas has clocked up more than 100,000 hits in just two months.

The popular, downloadable gobble, gobble ringtone helped boost numbers to the UK Turkeys website, as did the competition to win a family stay on a farm – which generated more than 5500 entries.

NFU poultry board vice chairman Mike Bailey said: “This year has been a phenomenal success with a record number of hits for the Ted Turkey website and many extra orders generated as a result.

“Behind all the fun and games on the website is a serious message – buying a local bird for Christmas ensures taste, quality and assurance is at a premium.

It makes sense to support your local producer – it is the best way to reduce food miles and look after the environment.”
