A slightly larger offering of rams than last year saw prices back slightly on the year at Hawes last week (25 and 26 October) as prices rose to £60,000.
Trade was up £718 on the first day for seven more sold, while the second day saw 20 more sold on the year and trade £781 back. Overall averages were back £33 overall for 27 more sold.
First at £60,000 was Helbeck Unique, which led the large breeder class and the sale overall for Stanley and Pat Brogden, Brough, Cumbria.
He is by Swaledale Hippy, a tup the Brogdens bought for £7,000 from Billing Shield and out of a ewe by Limelight, which has done exceptionally well for the flock.
Bidding started at £10,000 before a partnership of Mark Nelson, Bull and Cave, and Paul Hallam, Arnfield, sealed the show winner, with the Brogdens retaining a small share.
Second top at £55,000 and the highlight of a steadier second day was a ram bred in the heart of Swaledale from Steven and William Porter, Muker, who also claimed the small breeder second-placed prize.
This personal best is dubbed Summers Lodge Grayrigg 1 and is by a £6,500 Richard Harker and out of an old ewe who had twin champions as a shearling back in 2006.
Graham Pears, Sheffield, added to his £60,000 champion from Kirkby Stephen last week to produce a £55,000 winning bid.
Two cashed in at £38,000, the first from Patrick Sowerby of the Oakbank. This lot is by the £20,000 Buttertubs tup out of a Mossdale-bred ewe by Mossdale Interceptor.
Described as a modern-type, he brings plenty of stretch and a good skin and proved too good to miss for John Bland, Thwaite Bridge, with Patrick retaining a share.
Matching this was Bow Hill William from Andrew Dixon, Garnthwaite, which was knocked down to a trio of Messrs Richard Harker, Grayrigg; David Harker, Overthwaite; and Richard Harker, Barley.
He is by the £20,000 Lightfoot and out of a ewe by the £28,000 Valley, which sold in the top draft pen this year.
Next at £30,000 was Intake Bland from Mark Ewbank, which was bought by John Porter and Son, Low Oxnop. This eye-catching sire is out of another Mossdale Interceptor daughter and will be shared with Patrick Sowerby.
Averages: 638 rams (+27), £2,193 (-£33) (Hawes Farmers’ Auction Mart Company)
