Hereford bulls head to Harper Adams

Alderville 1 Ledbury web.jpgHarper Adams University College have purchased two Herefords bulls to use in their main dairy herd on the university campus and at their farm near Telford.

The bulls will be used to sweep up bulling heifers following a synchronised AI programme.

The bulls were chosen for legs and feet, good stature and temperament combined with excellent Estimated Breeding Values. The main EBV’s required were very easy calving, short gestation length, high terminal index, good eye muscle area and above average growth figures.

The bulls selected were Alderville 1 Ledbury from David Deaville, Belper, Derbyshire, and Thornby 1 Hubert from Miss AE Barlow, Thornby Farms, Northampton.

Two year old Ledbury, which meets the criteria in every department, is by the famous Yalgoo Boulder and out Aldersley 1 Lady Lynda 18th.

Thornby 1 Hubert, which is also two years of age, is by Weybrook 1 Duke 2nd and out of Thornby 1 Elexir. Hubert has exceptional EBVs throughout with good calving, growth and carcase traits culminating in a Terminal Index of +32 against a Breed average of +22.
