The Hungarian Ministry for Agriculture and Rural Development released a statement today (24 January) confirming the presence of H5N1 avian flu in five dead geese found at a farm earlier this week.

The ministry will now send samples to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge for official European Union tests to be conducted.

Hungarian officials culled the remaining 3,300 birds at the farm, located in the south-east of the country, including 30-40 geese which also showed signs of avian flu.

The ministry has introduced protection zones and preventative measures.
