The hunt is on to find the best Beef Shorthorn suckler herd in the UK.

The Beef Shorthorn Society and Morrisons have teamed up to launch the inaugural award, which is open to all commercial beef producers in Britain using a pedigree registered Beef Shorthorn bull over their herd.

The winner will be awarded a £500 cash prize and, together with the four finalists, will receive £250 bull purchase vouchers.

Scottish Agricultural College beef specialist Gavin Hill will judge the award, taking into consideration overall herd performance, including genetics, health, technical and financial management, and marketing arrangements.

Beef Shorthorn Society secretary Frank Milnes said: “We are delighted to make this first-time award supported by Morrisons. The venture is designed to reward all those producers who are using a Beef Shorthorn bull within their herd to breed a functional suckler replacement cow.”
