Lleyns set new breed records at Carlisle

A brace of new breed records were set at last Thursday’s Lleyn sale at Carlisle, with both males and females setting new high prices.

In the rams it was an 18,000gns bid for Prince of Powys, from D N Bennett and Son, Powys, which set the new mark. This one is by a Goldies sire and sold to Michael Cursiter, buying on behalf of Laga Farms, Orkney.Next best in the rams was a pair selling at 7000gns. First of these was from John and Rachel Geldard and Sons, Gilpin Bridge. This is by a Sackville-Hamilton tup and was knocked down to Bank Farm Partners, Worcester.  The other at this price was one from John Morton. This was Power House another by a Hamish Goldie sire,he sold to D N Bennett and Son, reinvesting some of their earlier earnings.

Other leading ram prices included a 3400gns sale for one from Emrys and Dylan Jones. This is by a Derek Steen sire and went home with Jock Allan, Biggar. Another from the same home and by a Wynne Davies sire then went at 3000gns to H and M Dugdale & Son, Settle.

And in the shearling ewes the breed record was broken twice in the sale, with the best of the day being a £500/head call for a pen from Charles Sackville-Hamilton, which went to Linda Barnard, Malton. This price eclipsed the breed record set earlier in the sale by a pen from the Geldard family. These sold at £460/head and also went to Linda Barnard.

Best of the day in the ewe lambs was £230/head realised by D N Bennett and Son when selling a pen to M Kinnes, Kilham.  A W Davies, Pwllheli, had a pen at £150 to Sean Magee, Newry, County Down, while Walling & Nixon of Melrose sold a pen for £145 to R and S Turnbull, Inverbervie.

Averages; shearling ewes £176.53, ewe lambs £108.70, ewes £115.54, rams £1019.03 (Harrison and Hetherington).
