A capacity crowd saw over 1200 sheep shorn during the annual International Sheep Shearing competition held at Coleg Llysfasi on the 7th June.

The event which holds international appeal, featured plenty of home grown talent, with no fewer than 12 out of the 24 top prize winners being former students of Coleg Llysfasi, one of the founder members of the College Farm Initiative run by the RASE and Farmers Weekly.

Young shearers working their way up the ranks, with many making a living as shearing contractors, help secure the future of high class sheep shearing in Wales.

This year’s high profile event is part of the Welsh qualifier for the 2008 World Championships, alongside other shearing events such as Corwen Shears and The Royal Welsh Show.

The high class commentary on the day helped to build up the excitement, particularly during the finals, making the event a great spectator sport, noted college principal Fred Cunningham. “These types of events, like the shows, take a lot of planning and executing but keep rural traditions alive and are well worth the effort.”
