Longhorn Cattle Society sale peaks at 7,600gns for a junior heifer

 

National Show & Sale 2012 Breed Champion Southfield Lyric.jpgThe Longhorn Cattle Society’s Annual National Show and Sale at Stoneleigh last week (10 and 11 August) saw a new record price of 7,600gns achieved for a female (pictured above).

The top call of the day went to the overall show Champion, Southfield Lyric, a junior heifer from David and Angela Blockley’s Yorkshire based herd.  She is by Blackbrook Philosopher and out of Southfield Fable, a daughter of Chianti that won Reserve Breed champion RASE 2003.  She was hotly contested by several breeders and was eventually secured by John and Pat Stanley for their renowned Blackbrook herd in Leicestershire.

Full twin sister to the Champion, Southfield Laya, who stood second in the show line up was also closely followed and levelled at a very creditable 2,250gns to Mark Wheeler, Stonehouse, Gloucester.

Senior heifers enjoyed a keen and sound following peaking at 2,750gns for Carreg KitKat from Bernard Llewellyn’s Llandeilo based herd.  She was 3 months in-calf to Carreg King and was out of Carreg Ginko; the buyer was Bryan Banham, Norwich, Norfolk.  Another Carreg heifer Ketchup also a first prize winner levelled at 2,100gns also to Mr B Banham.

The second highest priced senior heifer went to Natural England’s Stoke Kirch; by Dunstall Fearn out of a homebred cow, she went to local breeder Mr B Facon, Banbury, Oxon for 2,300gns.

Stock bulls were a selective trade and peaked at 2,700gns for the second prize senior bull Stoke Kojak from Natural England. He was a Southfield Aristocrat son out of Stoke Emanuel and went to David Hitchings, Church Farm Business Park, Bath.

First prize in the junior bull section went to David Walker’s “Newton Viking” by Newton Storm who had won numerous prizes including Male and Breed Champion, Great Yorkshire 2009.  He was purchased for 2,550gns by D & JC Chambers, Newton Bromswold, Northants.
