A top of 7500gns and an average £126 up on the year marked a succesful start to 2009 for Luing bull vendors at the breed’s sale at Castle Douglas last Friday.
Leading the trade was rising two year old bull Benhar Jaguar from Robert McNee, Woodend Farm, Armadale. Fully home-bred Jaguar is by Benhar X-File, a bull which goes back to Dirnanean Goldie, and out of Benhar Lily, a Merkland Amos daughter. Buying this one was John Fawcett, Merkland Farm, Thornhill, Dumfries.
Next top call was a 7000gns bid for Harehead Jake, a son of Benhar Flint. This one from W A Penny is out of Harehead Skylark and sold to join Messrs Graham and Son, Craigdarroch Farm, Sanquhar.
Third best was a 6000gns sale for Benhar Jacob, a March 2007-born son of Benhar Editor and out of Luing Whisky Mac daughter Benhar Z110. This red bull was snapped up by Annandale Estates, St Anns, Lockerbie.
At 4500gns John Fawcett recouped some of his earlier outlay when he sold Merkland Jefferson to the McNees. By Dirnanean Dakota, this one is out of homebred dam Merkland Ardlarach 10, a daughter of Dirnanean Rocky out of a Luing-bred dam.
Then at 3500gns William Renwick, Clachan Farmhouse, Lochbroom, Ullapool, sold 22-month old Lochbroom Jamie. Sired by Luing Factor, Jamie is out of Westwater Maree 12 and sold to join Finlay McGowan of Incheoch Farms, Alyth, Blairgowrie. This one carries Dirnanean breeding on his dam’s side and is fully Luing-bred on his sire’s side.
Among the females on offer the top call was a 2500gns bid for each of the champion pair of bulling heifers from Messrs Barr, Milkieston, Peebles. This duo, Milkieston J15 and Milkieston J28 are both by Benhar Zemin and sold to Messrs Cosgrave, Newcastle, Enfield, Co Meath, Eire.
Second best female sale was a brace of 2400gns sales for the champion in-calf heifers from Robert McNee. This pair were bought by D Stanners, Knowsley Park, Merseyside.
Averages: 16 bulls £4410, 109 bulling heifers £1391, 22 in-calf heifers £1451 (Wallets Marts).
