A string of big prices for some of the most sought after red and white genetics in the UK reached a peak of 5700gns when J Whiteford and Sons held the fourth production sale of their Middle herd at Beeston Castle Auction in Cheshire.

Although potential buyers from snow-stricken northern counties were absent from the ringside it did little to undermine the trade which levelled 141 head at £2114.

The Cumbria-based herd attracted a top call of 5700gns which came early in the day for Middle Mitzy MHS, a July-calved heifer by Middle Highland Supreme. Out of an 11,000kg dam by Butlersarms Lenni Red, she goes back to Prelude and Enhancer and was served in September to Sanderson Break Away. Buyers were A Woodburn and Sons, Galston, Ayrshire.

The decision by the Whiteford partnership to cease milk recording did littler to hamper the enthusiasm as bidders snapped up an impressive selection of stylish young cows and heifers. Heading back to Cumbria with D and C Sanderson, Wigton at 5200gns was the Middle Mitzy Ranger daughter Middle Emerald MR. She calved her second in September and was in-calf to Rulesmains Jordans Red.

Another from the same family, Middle Miss Red Emerald VG87, goes to Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire breeder Duncan Hunter at 4100gns. She’s by Middle Emerald Red with a sire stack that includes Morwick Sand Ranger Red who goes back to Pant Bright Silver. Mr Hunter matched the bid to claim Middle Nicolas BC VG85, a Brieryside Centurian heifer that was three months calved.

Local breeders S Bailey and Partners, Audlem, Cheshire were among the first buyers to break the 3000gns barrier when they paid 3300gns for a member of the great Jessie family. Middle Miss Jessie BC VG87 is by the Brieryside bull and combines some of the influential sires used to create the Jessie dynasty such as Kentville Stardust, Pant Diamond Prince and Round Bush Navigator.

The Sandersons were in again at 3300gns to claim the February 2004-bred Middle Margie MR Ex90, a Mitzy Ranger daughter that calved in August and was in-calf to Sandersons Break Away.

The third 3300gns call came from G Thomas, Llanelli for the Centurian calved heifer Middle Miss Margot BC 3rd. Northern Ireland buyer Aubrey Patterson took the Morwick Solano Red calved heifer Middle Molly MS at 3100gns while J and J Kinloch, Dumbarton secured the calved heifer Middle Border Blend MBB – a daughter of Middle Brown Boy from the successful Chrissie family.

Averages:  137 cows and calved heifers £2129 (incl 37 heifer calves at £832) and four in-calf heifers £1601. (Wright Manley).
