PRODUCERS USING on-farm diluted iodine-based teat dips should ensure the dip quality is maintained at all times, says vet Kate Bunby of West Sussex-based Stock 1st vets.

“Farm-mix dips should be mixed daily, as the quality declines over time due a number of factors. Water quality and the amount of air in the concentrate barrel are just two factors which can affect teat dip quality.

“On some farms we have even managed to culture mastitis bugs from the teat dip,” she warns. But she said mixing up what is needed each day would overcome many of these problems.

“This way the dip is always fresh and the chances of passing contamination from cow to cow is dramatically reduced.”
