Native breed entries are on the up at one of the first shows of the season, with Newark and Notts Show reporting a surge in support Longhorn and Red Poll cattle classes.

Some 34 entries have been received in the Longhorn classes and the Red Poll Society is to hols its annual breed show at the event for the first time.

And this may be only the beginning of a native breed resurgence at Newark with show society chief executive Adrian Johnston hopeful of staging a premier native breed show in the near future. “The Society has a benefactor waiting in the wings and we look forward to more entries in 2010 and beyond.”

Sheep entries are also up on last year too, with more than twice as many entered as in 2008, that should keep the judges, myself included busy over the two days!
