The Shorthorn Society’s annual show and sale, at Beeston Castle last Friday saw a top price of 5,000gns.
Leading prices was a heifer from the Nejay dispersal on behalf of Society President Neil Madeley and his wife Jayne, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, who decided to sell their award-winning herd following the consecutive milk price cuts.
Nejay Pamela Mary 9th is a daughter of Churchroyd Pluto and her dam classified Ex91 as a four-year-old. Following keen bidding she was knocked down to N and R Boote, Dunham Hill, Chester.
Next best when realising 3,300gns was the November 2011 born Rodway Melody 5th, a Nejay Amadeus daughter bred from two generations of cows scored VG. She sold to RD Kite and Son for their Cotonhall herd, having calved at the end of July. Sharing the ride home with her at 2,800gns was a Nejay Royalty daughter bred from a Ex92 dam.
R Crank and Son, Ince, Chester, secured Nejay Foggy 90th (VG87) for 3,000gns. Sired by Nejay Amazon she is out of a EX90-classified dam and sold due November to Nejay Earl with her third calf.
Next at 2,700gns was a Drisgol Watzon daughter bred from three generations of cows scored Very Good or Excellent. This one was snapped up by P Wyatt, Norfolk, who purchased a further 10 animals on the day.
Topping the show and sale section at 2,350gns was the champion Bilbro Rosebud from Martin Jackson, Thirsk, Yorkshire. Sired by Bilbro Jacko she is out of Rodway Rosebud 3rd. She last calved on 8 October and is giving 26 kilos a day. Buyer was Messrs Harries, Crosshands, Carms.
Cheshire’s Ed Whittaker saw the best of his heifers from his Tabley Herd, Cotonhall Joy 9th, make 1,900gns, when selling to Messrs Elkin, Hilderstone, Staffordshire. Purchased as a heifer she is sired by ANS Alliance Red.
Next best at 1,850gns was a consignment from Messrs C Royle and Sons, Altrincham-based Dunham herd. Dunham Daffodil 45th, a daughter of Nobility, sold to AV Jones, Corwen, Denbighshire, giving 27 kilos daily.
Second calvers topped at 1,700gns for Strickley Peeress Rose 36th from Messrs Robinson, Cumbria. Buyer was Messrs Malkin, Stone, Staffordshire.
In-calf heifers were led by the first prize-winner Irthingvale Watzon Duchess from G and B Bell, Tarporley, Cheshire, which made 1,500 gns to Richard Harper, Burland, Nantwich.
Maiden heifers were led at 1,200gns by Rodway Waterloo Rose 26th by Nejay Ernie. Buyer was Simon Thomas, Ceredigion.
