NEW ZEALAND SHEEP exports are to be represented by a new body, Meat and Wool New Zealand from July 2004.

The new organisation will take over “industry good” activities, including promoting exports of both meat and wool to Europe.

Chairman Jeff Grant said: “The market and the industry are in good heart. Lamb has the best future of any New Zealand commodity and is its most stable product.”

The new body is the outcome of a referendum among New Zealand farmers last year, over 70% of whom voted in support of a single organisation to represent their interests.

Mr Grant said Meat and Wool New Zealand was designed to be more accountable to its farmer stakeholders, who will have the right to vote on the organisation‘s future every five years.
