Free-range pig farmer Martin Martindale has been awarded Supreme Champion at this year’s Great Hampshire, Sausage, Pie and Ready Meal Competition.


Martin of Greenfield Pork Products netted the award on Wednesday (February 17) for his pork, goat’s cheese and watercress sausage.

The Andover-based outfit fought off stiff competition at this annual contest organised by the food group Hampshire Fare.

Now in it’s 9th year and held at Sparsholt College, it attracted nearly 200 entries from 28 Hampshire butchers and meat farmers. Judges awarded 71 gold certificates and 15 trophies.

In addition to collecting the Supreme Champion title, Martin scooped trophies for Best Hampshire Sausage, Best Speciality Pork Sausage, Best Traditional Pork Sausage and Best Hampshire Farmers’ Market Entry.

“Winning this has been the result of a wonderful team effort and attention to detail in what we produce,” he said.

“We rear our own free-range pigs, breeding quality and maintaining this quality right through to the end product. I am chuffed to bits that we won trophies for every sausage category that we entered.”

Hampshire Fare manager Tim Brock said: “This competition is important for Hampshire’s livestock farmers because these local butchers are using their meat. It’s also important for the high street – by using local butchers you can find out what meat is in the product, where it’s come from and how it was reared”.

Hampshire County Councillor Jonathan Glen said: “The competition was a resounding success, and highlights the quality of products made by Hampshire’s independent butchers and livestock farmers.”
