Red Ruby Devon autumn show and sale tops 2,250gns

The autumn show and sale of pedigree Red Ruby Devons at Sedgemoor topped at 2,250gns.

Leading trade was the Coxwell herd from Oxfordshire, with their reserve champion Coxwell Overlord, a young bull which has been consistently in the ribbons at multi-day shows this summer. He sold to David Watkins of Highfield, Holsworthy, Devon, where he will go to work in his large and well-established Landue Manor herd.

Just shy of this at 2,200gns was Mrs Shiamala Comer, who was reducing her Ashott Barton herd, Exmoor. Her top priced lot was the fourth calver Ashott Barton Tulip 7th, who sold with her bull calf at foot to Richard Toon, of Ashborne, Derbyshire.

Stonegrove Livestock, were back in the money with their champion Stonegrove Peregrine, a son of Bollowal Elgar, winner of many championship titles on the county circuit including Reserve Interbreed Champion at the Royal Three Counties Show in 2013. Peregrine sold privately for 2,000gns to Mr R Smith from Swindon, Wiltshire.

Long-time Devon breeder, Charles Morrish, Barnstaple Devon, purchased nine Ashott Barton in-calf heifers, paying an average of 942gns. All sold in-calf to Bywood Buttons 5th.

John White, Marlborough Downs, achieved top price of 1,100gns for in-calf heifers with Overtown Margaret 2nd  when selling to Mr T Welch, Honiton, Devon.

The female champion, a maiden heifer, Stonegrove Norie 31st, from Stonegrove Livestock, Worcestershire, made 1,155gns when selling to new Devon breeder, Andy Summers, Honiton.

Averages: 4 bulls, 1,984gns, 21 cows, 1,280gns; 22 in-calf heifers, 948gns; 23 maidens, 750gns.
