Sarkley production sale tops 17,000gns

In that bid to reach 200 breeding cows as soon as possible, Smiths of Bloxham were back in spending mood at last week’s Sarkley Limousin sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle taking home four of the top priced lots including one at 17,000gns.

The Pennie family of Glyn, Chris and Nigel never disappoint when it comes to forwarding female and male youngstock of the highest quality and this year’s production sale was no exception.

It was the Salomon daughter Sarkley Crystal that first caught Oxon-based Peter Smith’s eye to secure the top bid. Out of Sarkley Mystic, this January born heifer sold with a breeding value of +19 and was described by the Pennie’s as a real show prospect with width and power.

Joing the same load and with a price tag of 9000gns was Sarkley Corina. With a breeding value of +36, this Rocky daughter is out of the first calving Sarkley Verina, a daughter of Goldies Oswald.

Sarkley%209000gns.jpgKirkby Lonsdale-based Nether Hall Farms came in at 8000gns to secure the Nectar daughter Sarkley Chiara. This March daughter out of the Talent daughter Sarkley Valora, sold with yet another strong breeding value of +37 complimenting her muscle-bred pedigree.

Smiths of Bloxham were back in the action taking home the 6800gns Ronick Hawk daughter Sarkley Catrine. This stylish daughter out of Sarkley Nadine is yet another show hopeful for the future and has a breeding value putting her in the top 5%.

At 5500gns T C Altham, Whittington took home Sarkley Candy. By Silex and out of Sarkley Tiffany, her pedigree alone consisting of Domino, Jacot, Paquebot and Greensons Gigolo was enough to impress buyers.

Topping bull trade at 5100gns was Sarkley Cosmos, a Nenuphar son out of Sarkley Vine. This February born male sold to M S Potter, Farringdon, Oxon, with a breeding value of +31.

In at 5000gns was J P and C M Jones, Machynlleth, Powys, who secured Sarkley Colorado. This well muscled male is by the heavily muscled sire Milou out of Sarkley Ola.

Messrs Sowerby, Appleby, Cumbira, came in at 4800gns to secure another well muscled Rocky son, this time Sarkley Crusader out of the Ronick Gains daughter Sarkley Vorella.

Rocky sons continued to dominate bidding, with the +37 March born Sarkley Canyon going to D A Thompson, Morpeth, Northumberland for 4200gns.

Averages: 41 heifers £2703.11; 37 bulls £1684.36 (Harrison and Hetherington).
