A short entry of only 92 in the prime cattle pens at Colchester Market saw a fast trade, although prices weren’t incredible. Trade for commercial sorts were in line than last week, with some prime sorts doing better than usual.
Top price per head was £1136.66 for a heavy steer, consigned by W A Ketley and Sons and selling to C Humphrey and Sons. Next in line was a heavy heifer at £1107.52 selling to J Coleman.
Bulls topped at £888.81 for K W and A C Benson selling to J W F Hughes and Co.
Sheep also saw a short entry with mixed quality. Best fed lambs regularly made 125 to 141p/kg, while lean sorts made £1 and below to reduce the average sustainability.
Ewes were of good quality and met an extra demand, with strong mules topping at £50, mules £42 and hill types £15.
£4.50 was the top price per head consigned by Mrs M Garner.
Averages; 151 new season lambs averaged £123.25
