The British Simmental Cattle Society’s National Autumn Show and Sale saw bidding for the top bull peak at 6,000gns on Friday (7 November).
Carlisle’s Simmental sale topper was January 2013-born bull, Sterling Empire 13, from Boddington Estates, Gloucestershire. Sired by Mendick Butch 10 and out of Sterling Dolores Anna, this prize winning bull has one five junior championships and three overall male championships. He sold to N and N Gwynne, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire.
The highest female price went to David Pick’s cow, Scarthingwell Vixen, sired by Camus Brandy and out of Scarthingwell Wispas Nutmeg. She sold for 3,400gns with her bull calf, Scarthingwell Ferrari 14, at foot to H and DM Forster, Hexham, Northumberland.
It was back to the bulls for the next high price of 3,200gns for reserve male champion, Midhope Easter Egg 13. Consigned by WJ Hollingsworth, Midhopestones, Sheffield, he was sired by Dirnanean Snowie and out of Hockenhull Deborah 12th. Buyer was R Findlay, Hexham, Northumberland.
At 3,000gns was RH Carter and Son’s overall male champion and reserve supreme champion, Gerrard Eldorado 13, from Wigton, Cumbria. Sired by Blackford Harvester and out of Gerrard Royale 7th, he went home with Messrs Jolly, Rescobie, Forfar.
The same buyer also took home Richard McCulloch’s bull, Dolwen Elvis 13 from Armadale. Knocked down to 2,800gns, he was sired by Keeldrum Schubert and out of Blackford Rhiannon.
At the same money was the second highest priced female and reserve female champion, Chestermann Ringleader Veronica 2. Consigned by N and N Gwynne, Whithorn, she is sired by Blackford Ringleader and out of Penwen Veronica. In the top 5% of the breed for SRI at +89, she went home with Messrs Kirkby and Longworth, Broughton in Furness, Cumbria.
The same vendor also sold another female, Chertermann Ringleader Sage 2 for 2,600gns. Sired by Blackford Ringleader and out of Chestermann Maverick Sage, she went home with I and A Burgess, New Abbey, Dumfries.
Close behind, selling for 2,500gns was the female champion and supreme champion, Caistor Empress 33. Consigned by Brian Lundy, Caistor, Lincoln, she is sired by Omorga Volvo nd out of Caistor Empress 14th. Buyer was JM and S Edwards, Eccleshall, Staffordshire.
Top price from the major reduction of Andrew Ryder’s Ryden Herd fell to female Annanwater Viola. She sold for 2,000gns to JG and SM Tallentire, Appleby in Westmoreland, Cumbria.
Averages: Five bulls, £3,612; three cows served and/or suckling, £2,747.50; one in-calf heifer, £2,100; eight maiden heifers, £2,310.06; Ryden Herd – five cows and heifers served and/or suckling; one maiden heifer, £1,764.
