South Devon cattle breeders have scored what they believe to be a remarkable first by exporting semen from two UK bulls to Thailand.

Semen from AI Haughton SAS Joe Louis 1 and Trewint Henry 1 (pictured) has been sent to the Far Eastern country as the result of several years of work by Telford-based breeder Richard Hartshorn. Its thought to be the first UK semen to be exported to the country.

The semen hit Thai shores just in time for the country’s major agricultural exhibition, VIV Asia 2009 in Bangkok and enabled Mr Hartshorn to offer semen for sale to farmers visiting the show. “The interest was amazing from both Thai farmers and those from other Asian farmers.

“Cattle are a prized possession in Thailand, but there has been little progress in breeding over the years. Cattle can make the difference between a decent living or not for Thai farmers,” he added.
