South Devons achieve 5,000gns high at Skipton

A top price of 5,000gns was realised when South Devon cattle went under the hammer at Skipton.

Sale leader was Paul and Pam Harrison’s supreme champion, from their Brafferton herd in Tollerton, York. This 18-month0old is a son of Brafferton Hadrian 21 and is out of the prolific Brafferton Hadrian 1. He was bought by Douganhill Farms, Castle Douglas.

Next at 2,300gns was the reserve champion from Robert and Sally Lee, Edlingham, near Alnwick. This 2011-born heifer is by Enterprise Condor and is out of Lumbylaw Pride 21. She sold in calf to Lumbylaw Halcyon 8 and headed home with Arwyn Wikson, Powys.

The Harrisons netted a second rosette in the show class for 2012-born heifers with the Welland Valley Warrior daughter, Brafferton Stella 24, who was also among their National Herd Competition winners and is out of a multiple show-winning home-bred dam.

Next up were a trio of two-year old heifers from Ms Alex Welch, who runs the Galtres herd, Huby, York. Galtres Tropper Kay 50 and Galtres Trooper Suffragette 16, both home-bred sons of Portman Burtley Trooper, sold at 1,800gns and 1,500gns respectively, while the third, Galtres Winston Orchid 21, by Ewefields Winston, went under the hammer at 1,600gns. All three fell to the same buyer, Mrs G Cockburn, of Keswick.

Three junior in-calf heifers March 2012-born heifers due to Z Glebe Torr Down 2, from Sir John Bell, of Arncliffe Farms, Ingleby Cross, Northallerton, also proved popular at the ringside. The leading performer on price at 1,750gns was the Northwick General daughter Arncliffe Aconite 08, who joined Nidderdale buyer John Graham, of Lofthouse.

Next best at 1,650gns was Arncliffe Maple 05, by X Brettles SAS Fusilier, which was acquired by HS Halder and Son, of Whitby.

Meanwhile Z Arncliffe Bargain, a home-bred daughter of X Arncliffe Bailey, completed the trio at 1,600gns when joining BB and K Hope in Thirsk.
