South Devons enjoyed a solid trade at Stratford on Saturday when the breed set a new centre record, with the sale average for bulls rising by £439 on the corresponding fixture in 2010.

Leading the way and setting the new top mark at 8500gns was Welland Valley Jerome, an April 2009-born bull from M E and T E Broome, Market Harborough, Leicestershire.

Sired by Erme Jerome and out of Welland Valley Dorothy 2, a Welland Valley Red Giant daughter, he sold to Douglas Scott, Gloucestershire, with a quality beef index of +24 and suckler replacement index of +30.

Next best in the bulls was a 5200gns bid for Brettles SAS Intrepid from Messrs Rushbrooke. This April 2009-born entry is by Haughton SAS Joe Louis 4 and out of Brettles SAS Valerie 2, an Oxey Reddish 3 daughter. He was bought by J A Hopkins, Lympsham.

Then selling at 5000gns was Lumbylaw Leo 71, a Sexton Conqueror 67 son out of Lumbylaw Snowdrop 82, a Trewint Jubilee Junior 7 daughter. Consigned by A R Lee, Alnwick, this one has a QBI of +22 and an SRI of +28. He was knocked down to W L Pickford and Son, Malmesbury.

Close behind at 4700gns was Ridgemere Jacob from Messrs D and B Bowley. This one is by Highgate Hayden 11 and out of Sexton Snowdrop 489, a Godworthy Excalibur daughter. Selling with a QBI of +28 and an SRI of +32 he was taken by R J and C J Edwards, Tavistock, Devon.

And just shy of that at 4600gns was another from the Lumbylaw consignment, Lumbylaw Galahad 15. This one a Sexton Excalibur 16 son is out of Lumbylaw Kay 32, a Trewint Jubilee daughter and sold to J G Williams and Son, Craven Arms, Shropshire. He carries a QBI of +20 and an SRI of +25.

Best sale of the day in the strong offering of females was a 2550gns bid for March 2008-born first calver Severn Valley Maygirl 2 from M Pratt. This one by Goffe Cave Flash and out of Stretchford Maygirl 52, a Stretchford Flowerboy daughter, sold with a Belted Galloway cross calf at foot and in calf to Trewint Trooper 5. She was bought by bulk buyer Roger Elliot, Kislingbury, Northamptonshire.

Selling for 2450gns was maiden heifer Knowlhill Rose 10 from A E J and F J Claridge. This one is by Sexton Excalibur 7 and out of Knowlhill Rose 9, a Waddeton Drusus 4 daughter. She sold to Dereham, Norfolk-based buyer D Archer.

Then at 2350gns was another of the cow and calf lots from M Pratt, this time Severn Valley Petunia. Sired by Godworthy Excalibur 36 and out of Badgworth Petunia 5, a Trewint Jubilee Junior 10 daughter, she sold with a heifer calf at foot by Badgworth Rob Roy 2. Buying her was Roger Elliot.

A brace of 2100gns bids followed that, with the first coming for a cow with calf at foot from The Tully Partnership, Waddeton Ann 94. This Waddeton Centry 4 daughter is out of Waddeton Jubilee Ann 74, an Edmeston Eclipse 4 daughter. Selling with a bull calf at foot this third calver found a new home with J Archer, Norfolk.

The other to make this price was maiden heifer Grove Hawthorn 42 from Douglas Scott. Sired by Goffe Cave Navigator and out of Grove Hawthorn 32 an Asdig Concorde 5 daughter she sold with a QBI of +23 and an SRI of +30 to D Holt Harpenden, Hertfordshire.
