The first Speckle Park bull ever to be sold at auction in the UK has been secured for £2,300 at Sedgemoor.

The National Record UK  price of £2,300 was achieved for Columbpark Xfactor from Matt & Vicky Smith (of Columbpark Limousin fame) who found his new home with Mrs C Thorner, Bridport.

Xfactor is 100% Speckle Park, a breed has been developed in Canada since the late 1950’s and is an amalgamation of several native breeds including Aberdeen Angus, Shorthorn and White Park genetics.  Speckle Park are naturally polled, hardy and able to thrive on forage alone. They produce beautifully marbled meat without excess fat from their medium size carcase.

Columbpark Xfactor is out of Glencardon Ursiline (ET) who was imported to the UK from Ireland by Matt and Vicky, making her one of a pair of the first Speckle Parks to ever set foot in the UK.

On the back of this first for the UK, Matt & Vicky went on to make another sale of their three and a half year old Speckle Park stock bull Knockane Upton. Upton sold to  Xfactor’s underbidder for an undisclosed figure (semen rights retained). He will be working in a 130 cow suckler herd.

This entry of Speckle Park was part of a real quality entry for the Monthly Catalogued Sale of Sucklers held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre which saw trade at record levels.

Cows with well bred, well grown calves at foot were at a premium, especially continentals.  Leading the way was a British Blue x cow with a show potential Limousin heifer calf that realised £2,630 from Messrs J J and B D Comer of Swindon, who also had a pure bred Limousin cow with a heifer calf at foot that realised £2,450.

Messrs M R and V A Smith also sold Columbpark Gandolf, a yearling Limousin bull for £2,000.  The sale started with a Black Limousinx cow with a Limousinx heifer calf  that realised £1,670 for Mr W J Bown.  And a Charolais x cow with Hereford heifer calf for Mr R H Webb realised £1,600.

A smart pedigree Aberdeen Angus cow and 3 month old bull calf from Messrs E A and M C Jones of Cullompton also sold at the same money.  (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)
