Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to record breed average of £6,107 on Tuesday at Stirling, with a top call of 18,000gns leading trade.

 

Breed society chief executive Ron McHattie said: “Strong bulls made good trade, with 11 bulls earning five figures. We had commercial farmers paying up to 11,000gns for Angus bulls.”

 

Averages were up by £925 on the year, despite the fact fewer bulls sold, with clearance rates leveling at 73%.

 

Sale leader was the overall and junior champion Haymount Precursor M255, from Messrs J and W Arnott, Kelso. Sired by Blelack Prince Carl J237, which was purchased at Stirling two years ago for 10,000gns, he is out of the Tonley Elgin D226 daughter Haymount Progina H843. Buyer was Alastair Houston, Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire.

Two lots made the second-best price of 17,000gns.

First at this money was the senior and reserve champion Wedderlie Ebsolution M570, from JH and HM Tilson, Gordon.

By Nightingale El Paso J489 he is out of the Abberton Marshall Beau D084 daughter Wedderlie Ebronte F259. He was knocked down to Mr Donegan, Maam, Galway, Ireland.

Next at the same money was the reserve intermediate champion Nightingale Proud Jake G405 son Hallington Edition M362, consigned by Alan Lawson and Son, Newcastle on Tyne.

This April-2012 born bull is out of the Wedderlie Blackadder Z093 daughter Blelack Ebolass C661. Buyer was Mr Hodge, Duns, Berwickshire.

Selling at 15,000gns was the reserve senior champion Balmachie Black Bard M135 from Messrs JF Lascelles, Carnoustie. This March 2012-born, homebred bull is  sired by Balmachie Black Bear and out of The Moss Mr Eshton D409 daughter Netherton Blackbird H489. He sold to Messrs Grieve, Leven, Fife.

Next at the same money was Messrs J Gilmour and Co’s reserve junior champion Belhaven Perthshire M056, from Penston, Macmerry. Sired by Oakchurch Field Marshall K143 he is out of Belhaven Perfect Polly H074. Buyer was Messrs Robson, Otterburn, Northumberland.

 

Then at 14,000gns was Haymount Walarlo from the same stable as the champion and bred by the same sire, but out of the Old Glenort Kallum D784 dam Haymount Walluma J899. Buyer was K and M Howie, Banchory, Aberdeenshire.

 

Selling for 13,000gns to M and S Wilson, Beattok, Dumfriesshire, was Tonley Essex M855 from Neil Wattie, Alford, Aberdeenshire. Sired by Carrington Park Time On B7 he is out of Tonley Ester K735 and carries a TSI of +39 and an SRI of +50.

 

Females

 Females topped at 8,500gns was the pre-sale champion Tonley Elma M850 also from Neil Wattie. Sired by Rawburn Enigma G653 she is out of Tonley Elma C160. She sold in calf Tonley Emmerson M869 to Harry Emslie, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, carrying a TSI of +43 and an SRI of +58.

At the second best price of 5,800gns was Rawburn Blackbird L388 from John Elliot, Kelso. This Rawburn Double OSeven J985 daughter is out of Rawburn Black Beauty B166 and is due in May to Rawburn Transformer, with a TSI of +44 and SRI of +55. She was bought by J Robson, Augher, Co Tyrone.

 

Two more females from the Rawburn herd production sale sold for 5,000gns.

First of these was The Moss Felicia G739 sired by Vermilion Dateline 7078 and out of MVF Felicia 47J. She sold in-calf to Rawburn El Cordobes M502 and carries a TSI of +37 and SRI of +49. Buyer was Des Donegan, Maam, Galway.

 

Second at this money was the March 2011 born heifer Rawburn Duchess Prairielane, sired by Rawburn Elmer J921 and out of Rawburn Duchess Prairielane J938. Buyer was Highland Wagyu, Dunblane, Perthshire.

 

Averages: 83 bulls, £6,107 (£5,182 for 103 bulls sold in 2013).
