Strong trade for Colchester prime cattle and sheep

More than 140 prime cattle met a keen demand from buyers at Colchester this week, with plenty of quality cattle making more than 170p/kg and a total of seven grossing more than ÂŁ1000/head.

Top price in the market went to A and W Bentall’s medium heifer which made 175.5p/kg when selling to R Lennox. Highest price among the steers was R Thorrnton’s entry which made 173.5p/kg and sold to J H Lambert.

Prime lambs, meanwhile, also met a ready trade, with all buyers reportedly short of numbers .

Top among the lambs were J Waspe’s Suffolk Show first prize winners which made 224p/kg (ÂŁ74/head) selling to Peter Hollingsworth, Chelmodiston, for his own shop.

Among the rest of the lambs there were plenty of pens making more than 200p/kg and ÂŁ80/head.
