SUCKLER COW quota trading began this week (ending June 18) with business getting off to a brisk start and traders expecting prices to remain firm.

Joanne Sowter, head of sales at quota broker Ian Potter Associates, said: “Prices have started quite high. Our first trade on lowland leased quota was for £115 a livestock unit.

“Last June, the price was just £65/LU, but rose to £130/LU at the end of the season.”

She added that this was the last year for trading suckler cow quota following CAP reform.
